The postcard features an illustration of a crocus surfacing from the snowy ground. From the earth below, people emerge playing trumpets.
Walden was a chemist who is known today for inventing the stereochemical reaction known as the "Walden inversion," which inverts a stereogenic center in a chiral molecule. From 1892-1919, Walden was a faculty member at Riga Polytechnic University. In 1919 he left his position, possibly due to World War I and its effects on Latvia.

Liebwerter Freund u. verehrter Herr Kollege!
W. Walden.

Dear friend and colleague,
The past year should not end without me expressing my warmest thanks for your kind letter. Yes, yes, we have the memories of the past, of our own will and hope, and of our actual success and accomplishments! We were looking for the blue flower of happiness and success at a young age. We can now claim all the years of enthusiasm, the love of science, and a peaceful, blessed home as our own.
May the blessings of Heaven prevail over your home again in the New Year and keep all sickness and worries at bay.
We faithfully extend our warmest wishes to you and your dear wife.
P.Walden
W. Walden.
