General view of Perkin-Elmer Corporation Vice President Thomas Fahy (right) and two unidentified individuals examining a model of a stratoscope, a balloon-borne astronomical telescope designed to study the turbulence and granulation in the Sun's photosphere, as well as planetary atmospheres. Stratoscopes were conceived of by astrophysicist Martin Schwarzschild (1912-1997) and primarily flown from the 1950's to the 1970's.
