General view of an unidentified group examining a Perkin-Elmer stratoscope, a balloon-borne astronomical telescope designed to study the turbulence and granulation in the Sun's photosphere, as well as planetary atmospheres. Stratoscopes were conceived of by astrophysicist Martin Schwarzschild (1912-1997) and primarily flown from the 1950's to the 1970's.
