Lieber alter Freund:
Wegen sehr pressanter Beschäftigungen vergass ich Dir zum 50. Geburtstag meine herzlichsten Glückwünsche zu senden und ich hole das Versäumte jetzt nach. Wir stehen jetzt in einer Regierungskrisis. Die Wahlen sind nach der demonstraktischen Seite ausgefallen, so dass das steinköpfige konservative Ministerium nicht länger sitzen kann. Die Stellung ist recht unklar, denn es ist keine angenehme Sache die elende Erbschaft mit den schweren Finanzen nach der alten schlechten Wirtschaft aufzunehmen. Trotzdem wir nicht im Kriege sind und hoffentlich nicht kommen müssen wir die schweren Zeiten durchmachen mit verdoppelten Preisen in fast allen Waaren, totalem Mangel an vielen denselben wie Petroleum, und sehr knappen Vorräten an Kohlen und Getreide. Wir sehnen uns ebenso stark nach der Frieden wie die anderen kriegsfährenden Völker. Das Schlimmste ist das Europa nachher vollkommen verarmt sein wird, so dass man mit der Not zu fechten hat durch mehrere Jahre oder sogar Jahrzehnte. Ich und meine Familie waren im Sommer im Bad nahe bei Helsingborg und haben uns da prachtvoll erholt nach dem trauigen harten Winter. Hoffentlich geht es uns gut im künftigen Jahr. The Fields for Experiments at the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry, 4 October 1917
Dear old friend:
Due to many pressing engagements, I forgot to wish you well on your 50th birthday. I am now catching up on what I missed. We are now experiencing a government crisis. The Democrats won and the belligerent, conservative ministry can no longer hold on to power. The position is rather unclear, because it is unpleasant to inherit a difficult financial situation in a poor economy. Although we are not at war, we still have to persevere in difficult times. We are dealing with doubled prices for all commodities, a total lack of many like petroleum, and limited amounts of coal and grain. We long for peace as much as the other countries at war. The worst thing is that Europe will be completely impoverished afterwards, so that it will experience hardship for several years or even decades to come. My family and I visited a resort near Helsingborg over the summer and had a wonderful respite after the hard winter. Hopefully, we will do well in the coming year. Warm regards.
