Electrophoresis in general uses an electric field to separate particles in a medium (like a gel) based on their size, charge, or a binding affinity. This instrument, developed by Spinco in 1954, contained three components: an electrolytic cell in which the separations of particles occur, a regulated direct current power supply for the cell, and a recording densitometer to quantify the results on the paper strips.
