The poem, written in the first-person point of view, is a promise to embrace temperance. It is printed first, continuously, then each verse is printed on a separate leaf with an illustration on the opposite page. Finally, the poem is reprinted as it was first published in February 1901 in 17 strophes. The edition was limited to 750 numbered copies and this particular volume is number 616 of 750. It is printed on Holland paper and includes 26 original drypoint etchings by Romanian artist Jean de Paleologue (1855-1942). Many of the leaves in this copy are unopened and its pages are uncut. The work's flyleaf includes an inscription from the author.
