Lieber Max-Albert!

Zu Deinem Geburtstag sende ich Dir meine herzlichen väterlichen Glückwünsche. Du meinst, dass Deine Eltern Deine treuesten Freunde sind u. sie Dir nur Gutes wünschen können. Das neue Lebensjahr möge der Beginn Deiner wirklichen Mannesjahre werden, in denen Du Dir Dein Leben selbstbewusst selbst zu zimmern beginnst. Das geschieht natürlich nur, wenn man alle Zaghaftigkeit über Bord wirft, aber auch alle unbestimmte Träumereien fallen lässt. Es ist durchaus nicht nötig u. oft nicht möglich, sogleich das beste Ziel klar herauszufinden. Die Hauptsache ist, dass man sich nur

überhaupt einmal ein anständiges, wohlüberlegtes Ziel wählt u. dieses dann aber auch energisch und pflichtbewusst sachlich, fleissig, u. nicht dilettantisch spekulativ verfolgt. Etwas kommt bei stetiger, sachlicher Arbeit immer heraus. Dabei muss man auch mit seinen Kräften u. seiner Gesundheit durch regelmässiges vernünftiges Leben haushalten lernen, ohne durch Schlamperei verwirklichen. Vor allem ist eine anständige u. andauernde Zeiteinteilung u. Zeitökonomie wichtig. Die heutige junge Generation kann sich den Luxus der Zeitvergeudung nicht leisten. Einmal in der Jugend Versäumtes ist später kaum oder nie nachzuholen, vor Allem nicht in Bezug auf Vorbildung. Bedenke vor Allem, dass nur Du allein Deines Glückes wirklicher Schmied sein kannst.

Gestern sande ich 100 Exemplare der vom Studentendienst gedruckten Danksagung zu Deiner Dissertation. Der Satz bleibt vorläufig stehen; schreibe, sobald Du Näheres erfährst, ob Du noch mehr Exemplare für Kallman u. Hochschule brauchst u. wieviel. Ich habe (was du wohl missverstanden hast) nur die schriftliche Widmung auch an Deine Mutter auf dem einen uns gesandten Dissert. – Exemplare vermisst. Eine gedruckte Widmung an Deine Eltern hätte ich auch für überflüssig gehalten, da es zwischen uns wohl auf die Äusserlichkeiten nicht ankommt, wohl aber auf das Gedenken.

Inzwischen hast Du wohl auch die Abschrift des neuen Briefes von Herrn Fajans vom 15. Juni u. den neuen Brief vom Herrn Haber (bezw. Mark) erhalten.

Ich hoffe, dass Du nunmehr Herrn Fajans eine etwas klare Antwort als erste geschickt hast. Wenn er Dir ein Not-Gemeinschaft Stipendium von ca. 150-200 M auf vorläufig ein Jahr geben kann, wäre sein Vorschlag wohl sehr erwägenswert. Sommerfeld hat übrigens den Berliner Ruf abgelehnt! Erwägenswert ist wohl auch den Vorschlag von Herrn Mark. Aber die Entscheidung musst Du nun treffen. Mark wartet wohl gern ein Weilchen, aber die Meldung musstest Du auf alle Fälle jetzt schon an die I.G. schicken, die ja Dich vorläufig noch nicht verpflichtet.

Verlebe Deinen Geburtstag, lieber Max, vergnügt u. hoffnungsfroh. Du hast doch in Deinem Alter u. bei dem nicht ungünstigem Freundeskreis bei Deinen guten Anlagen alle Ursache dazu, u. sei herzlich gegrüsst von Deinem Vater. Beste Empfehlungen ev. an die Herren Franck u. Pohl.

Dear Max-Albert,

On your birthday, I send you my heartfelt, paternal best wishes. You think your parents are your most loyal friends and they can only wish you well. May this new year of life be the commencement of your real manhood, in which you begin to shape your own life with self-confidence. Of course, that only happens if you abandon all timidity and vague daydreams. It is not always necessary and often impossible to determine the best path. The main thing is that

you choose an honorable, deliberate goal and then pursue it effectively, dutifully, objectively, diligently, but not speculatively and amateurishly. Something is always achieved with constant, objective work. At the same time, you must also learn to maximize your strength and health by living decently and sensibly, and not irresponsibly. Above all, it is important to have proper, continuous time management. Today's young generation cannot afford the luxury of wasting their time. Something that was missed in youth can hardly or never be made up for later, especially with regards to education. Most importantly, remember that only you can be the true architect of your own happiness.

Yesterday, I sent 100 copies of the thank you notes, which were printed by student services, for your dissertation. The amount remains the same for now. Write to me as you soon as year hear if you need more copies for Kallman and the university and how many. I only missed the written dedication to your mother on the dissertation copy sent to us (which you probably misunderstood). I would also have considered a printed dedication to your parents to be unnecessary, especially since formality doesn’t matter to us, but rather commemoration.

In the meantime, you have probably also received the copy of the recent letter from Mr. Fajans from June 15th and the recent letter from Mr. Haber (also Mr. Mark).

I hope that you have now sent Mr. Fajans a definitive answer. If he can give you a funding association scholarship of approximately 150-200 Marks for one year, his offer would be worth considering. By the way, Sommerfeld turned down the Berlin position! Mr. Mark's offer is also worth considering. However, you now must make the decision. Mark could wait for a while, but you must certainly notify I.G., although the decision is not binding for the time being.

Spend your birthday, dear Max, happy and full of hope. At your age and with your favorable circle of friends and good disposition, you have every reason to be!
