Sehr geehrte gnädige Frau!
Zunächst herzlichen Dank für Ihren Brief vom 16. ds. und Ihre freundlichen Glückwünsche!
Leider erfüllt sich nicht meine Hoffnung, Sie nicht mehr in dieser Angelegenheit des Affidavits belästigen zu müssen. Ich habe den Eindruck, dass meine Furcht, es handelt sich bei Warburg um irgend ein Missverständnis, doch berechtigt ist!
Die mir von Ihnen freundlichst mitgeteilte telegraphische Antwort Viktors auf Ihre Anfrage über das ihm angeblich zugesicherte Affidavit schien mir nicht befriedigend, sodass ich noch einmal cabelte, und nach dem Namen des Gebers fragte! Heute erhielt ich folgende Antwort: BESCHAFFUNG AFFIDAVITS VON WARBURG ZUGESAGT GNEUEGT ALSO VERMUTLICH STOP UNTERNIMM KEINERLEI SCHRITTE BEI IHM ICH SCHREIBE NAEHERES!! MARIANNE
Das kann natürlich bedeuten, dass W. neben dem von ihm, nach Ihrer Mitteilung, an Paul Homburger bereits vergebenen Aff. nun eines für Viktor „beschaffen“, also vielleicht von anderer Seite erlangen will. Warum hat man aber das Ihnen dann nicht mitgeteilt als man Ihnen sagte, dass Warburg abgesagt hätte? Da scheint doch irgend etwas nicht in Ordnung zu sein, meinen Sie nicht auch?
Was man tun kann, angesichts der Anweisung meiner Schwester, keine Schritte zu unternehmen bei ihm, sehe ich noch nicht, aber vielleicht können Sie durch Ihren Mittelmann vorsichtig etwas darüber erfahren?
Ich bin natürlich bereit, entgegen der Anweisung von Karlsruhe, ausser meinem Affidavit für meinen Vater, das ich heute abgesandt habe, auch eines für Viktor und meine Schwester zu geben, wenn ich auch fürchte, dass der consul mein Affidavit allein für die ganze Familie vielleicht nicht anerkennen wird. Es wäre natürlich sehr viel besser, wenn man erfahren könnte, wie es nun wirklich eigentlich mit Warburg steht! Allerdings scheint dabei Vorsicht nötig zu sein, warum, weiss ich nicht!
Hoffentlich werden Sie nicht allzu ungeduldig über diese arge Complizierung der Geschichte! Wo der Fehler steckt, sehe ich absolut nicht.

Dear Madam,
First of all, thank you very much for your letter from December 16th and your kind well-wishes!
Unfortunately, my hope that I will no longer have to inconvenience with you this affidavit matter has not been fulfilled. I am under the impression that my fear concerning a misunderstanding with Warburg is valid!
Viktor's telegram response to your inquiry about the affidavit allegedly promised to him, which you kindly informed me about, did not seem satisfactory to me. Hence, I sent another telegram asking for the name of the sponsor. I received the following answer today: OBTAINMENT OF AFFIDAVIT FROM WARBURG APPROVED / PROBABLY SUFFICIENT / STOP / DO NOT FOLLOW THROUGH WITH HIM / I WILL WRITE MORE!! MARIANNE
This can of course mean that Warburg, in addition to the affidavit he has already given to Paul Homburger according to your letter, now wants to “obtain” one for Viktor from another source. However, why weren’t you informed of that decision when you heard that Warburg declined? Something seems askew. Don't you think so?
I don’t know what can still be done, especially given my sister's instructions not to proceed further with him. Can your intermediary perhaps tell you something?
Contrary to the instructions received from Karlsruhe, I am of course prepared, in addition to my affidavit for my father, which I sent today, to also write one for Viktor and my sister. I will do this even though I fear the consul may reject my affidavit for the entire family. It would of course be much better to find out how things really stand with Warburg! However, it seems necessary to proceed be caution. I don't know why!
Hopefully, you won’t become too annoyed with this serious complication in the storyline. I am utterly unsure of where the mistake lies.
