The portrait was adhered to the inside of a card which came with a personal note from Curtius. The front of the card has a wax seal from R. Herbst, Heidelberg.
Throughout his career, Curtius was a professor of chemistry at the University of Heidelberg, the director of the analytical chemistry department at the University of Erlangen, and the chairperson of the chemistry department at the University of Kiel. He published the Curtius rearrangement in 1890 and additionally discovered diazoacetic acid, hydrazine, and hydrazoic acid
