Max asks his father to arrange for his sister Marianne and her husband Victor to seek refuge in Chile without their children. In as early as the 1890s, many Latin American countries accepted Jewish refugees. Due to the mass emigration of Jewish people in WWII and the rise of antisemitism, immigration laws became restricted and in 1939 emigration was nearly impossible, as is reflected in Max's letter.
