Hochgeehrter Herr Kollege!
Für Ihren freundlichen Glückwunsch danke ich Ihnen herzlich. Allerdings ist der 60. Geburtstag, der übrigens nun schon wieder eine ziemliche Spanne Zeit zurückliegt, kein Freudentag. Er bringt einem zu einer Zeit, wo es zum Ausspannen doch noch etwas zu früh ist, die mit den Jahren abnehmende Leistungstätigkeit deutlicher zum Bewusstsein. Dieses unangenehme Gefühl wird verschärft durch die an den Kriegsfolgen entsteigenden Verhältnisse, welche besonders hohe Anforderungen an jeden stellen.

Dear Colleague,
Thank you very much for your kind well-wishes. However, one’s 60th birthday, which I incidentally had a while ago, is not a joyful occasion. Turning this age reminds me that while it’s still too early to retire, I are more aware of the decline in my performance over the years. This uncomfortable feeling is exacerbated by the circumstances arising from the consequences of the war, which place particularly high demands on everyone.
