Mein lieber Max-Albert!

Besten Dank für Deinen ausführlichen Flugpostbrief vom 6 (?) d. M., der am 8. Juli mittags bei mir einlief. Ich habe lange darauf gewartet, glaube aber gern, dass Du Dich erst von den Anstrengungen u. Zufällen der Reise erholen musstest, was nun hoffentlich möglichst vollständig eingetreten ist. Marianne erzählte freilich, dass Du 3 kg. abgenommen hast! Auch die Karte vom Werbellinsee habe ich danken erhalten.

Ich gratuliere Dir auch zu den guten Dissert.-Note des Herrn Kou Kin Hsing. Das private Zuprosten des „Obmanns“ dürfte wohl weiter keine Bedeutung haben. Wird die Dissert.- publiciert u. wann. u. wo? –

Herrn Dr. Nord habe ich gestern geschrieben u. ihm für Sonderabdrucke u. reine freundliche Hilfsbereitschaft in London gedankt. Herr Gaede habe ich hier seit 3 Jahren weder gesehen noch gesprochen. An Mark werde ich auch in diesen

In einem Punkte hat Mark jedenfalls recht: „Arbeite ruhig u. pflichtgemäss“ aber immer mit offenen Augen für die Zukunft! Wie steht es mit Deinem übrigen Urlaub? Wann werden wir uns wiedersehen? Im Herbst werden wohl Entscheidungen fallen müssen.

Tagen schreiben, da ich ihm Dank für eine Reihe kurzer Ansichtspostkartengrüsse schuldig bin. Er meint es gewiss ganz gut, u. im Notfalle wäre es ja auch ganz schön, wenn Du in seinem Institut einen Platz bekämest, aber davon könntest Du nicht leben u. wovon sonst in Wien? – Sir Robert Mond wird Dich wohl 10 Minuten nach Deiner Vorstellung vergessen haben. – Hat Fajans etwas gesagt, ob er vor seiner Reise nach U.S.A noch einmal nach Deutschland kommen u. mich sehen wolle? Im August werden wir vielleicht nicht in Karlsruhe sein, da wir eine Reise nach ital. Riviera oder Jugoslawien (Bled) erwägen. An Berl werde ich wohl auch ein Paar freundl. Zeilen nach Gasten schreiben sollen? Jedenfalls suche Du mit ihm in Kontakt zu bleiben. (A.C.C. heisst wohl American Cyanamid Comp.?)

Wegen der Vorschläge von H.H.F. hast Du sehr recht. Jedenfalls betone, dass Dir die 2 Jahre Carenz-Gehalt so gut wie nichts nützen können.

denn dieses Geld müsstest Du doch, wenn Du die 2 Jahre nicht für Dein Fortkommen verlieren willst, im Ausland verzehren, wo sie als Sperrmark ja zur Zeit sowie nur 30% wert sind. F Im Inland aber kannst Du deshalb doch nicht bleiben.

Du musst nun sehen, was bei der Unterredung von Berl mit A.R.F. herausgekommen ist, wenn sie überhaupt stattgefunden hat. Wegen des Gegensatzes der Ratschläge von Berl u. Mark müssen wir also wohl überlegen. Der von Berl ist jedenfalls der realere u. es handelt sich darum, ob überhaupt noch eine Hoffnung ist, in Deutschl. für Dich eine Existenz zu finden oder bei den Bayern. zu bleiben. Da müsste wohl in der Gesamtlage ein Wunder geschehen, dass kaum zu erwarten ist. Aber in den nächsten Wochen kann ja mancher sich umgruppieren, obwohl ich fuer uns nicht viel davon erhoffe. Bei allerzulangem Warten verschlechtern sich die amerikan. Möglichkeiten vermutlich sehr.

Bei Deiner Diskussion mit Robison fiel mir ein, obwohl die Möglichkeit besteht, dass sich zuerst, wie ja häufig (nach der Ostwald-Bancroft’schen Regel), doch vorübergehend, die

Dann müsste man eben das Gitter des frischen Niederschlages sofort untersuchen u. nachsehen, ob beim Lagern in der Mutterlauge erst sich der stabilere Hydroxylapatit bildet, der dann die beim Austausch abgegebenen CO3 “ bezw. PO4 “ Anionen noch adsorbiert oder in den Gitterlücken festhält. – Vorgestern erhielt ich von J. Brentano aus Manchester die Sonderabdruck einiger Röntgenarbeiten zugesandt u. vermute fast, dass die Sendung Dir gilt. Ich schicke sie Dir daher also Drucksache heute zu. –

Was erzählten denn Egloff’s von Tausz u. wie macht sich dieser in ihren Augen? Tausz wäre ev. auch hilfsbereit, aber ob er kann, ist ungewiss. Auch an Schnell habe ich wegen seiner Bitte um Referenz bei der Amer. Chem. Soc. bejahend geschrieben u. ihn für seine Gastfreundschaft zu Dir gedankt. Versäume Du auch nicht, mit allen Wohlmeinend stets Kontakt zu behalten! Eine flüchtige Karte von Cohen liegt bei, aber beachte sie auch. – Es ist schade, dass Du die interessanten Städte nur so flüchtig berühren könntest. Das schönste in Antwerpen ist m. E. die Gemäldegalerie u. im Haag hast Du auch nicht einmal das Mauritshuis gesehen. Das Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam wäre m. E. auch interessanter als Rotterdam gewesen. Nun, ein andermal, dann versäume das aber nicht, besonders Rembrandt ist ein Erlebnis.

Das Contobuch bitte ich zu prüfen u. mit Ausgleichbestätigung bald an mich zurückzusenden. Wieviel Reserve hast Du noch Baar in Berlin? Many thanks for your detailed airmail letter from July 6th, which arrived at noon on July 8th. I’ve been waiting for this for a long time. Yet I want to believe that you first had to recover from the hassles and fortuities of the trip, which hopefully have concluded. Of course, Marianne said that you lost 3 kilograms. I also received your postcard from Lake Werbellin. Thank you!

Congratulations on Mr. Kou Kin Hsing’s good dissertation grade. The chairman’s private toast should probably have no further meaning. Will the dissertation be published. When and where?

I wrote to Dr. Nord yesterday and thanked him for the reprints and his kind hospitality in London. I haven’t seen or spoken to Mr. Gaede here in 3 years.

I will write to Mark in the next few days.

In any case, Mark is right about one thing: “Work calmly and dutifully” but always keep your eyes open for future opportunities! What about the rest of your vacation? When will we see each other again? Decisions will probably have to be made in the fall.

I owe him a thank you note for a few postcards that he sent me. He certainly means well, and in an emergency, it would be nice if you could obtain a position at his institute. However, you couldn’t afford to live in Vienna, and what else is there? Sir Robert Mond will probably have forgotten you 10 minutes after your introduction. Did Fajans say anything coming to Germany one more time to visit me before his trip to the U.S.A? In August, we likely won’t be in Karlsruhe because we are considering taking a trip to the Italian Riviera or Yugoslavia (Bled). Should I probably write a kind note to Berl in Bad Gastein? In any case, try to keep in touch with him. (A.C.C. probably means American Cyanamid Company)

You are right regarding the suggestions made by H.H.F. In any case, emphasize that the 2-year leave salary will be of almost no use to you.

If you don't want to lose your 2 years of leave salary, you would have to spend the money abroad, where it is only worth 30% of its original value in blocked marks. F However, that doesn’t mean you can’t stay in Germany.

You must now see what happened during Berl’s conversation with A.R.F., if it happened at all. Because of the contradictory advice given by Berl and Mark, we must therefore think twice. In any case, Berl’s advice is the most realistic. The only question is if there is still any hope at all for you to find a position in Germany or to stay at the Bavarian Nitrogen Works. A miracle would have to happen in this situation and that is not likely. However, some people can regroup in the next few weeks, but I don’t expect much from it for us. If you wait too long, the American opportunities will probably diminish.

During your discussion with Robison, it occurred to me that it is possible that initially (but temporarily), as is often the case (according to the Ostwald-Bancroft rule),

F Mark’s offer is well-intentioned, but as I said, only amicable (according to Olstepp, you won’t receive the leave money or only 30% of it). It hardly helps in addition to H.H.F’s suggestion.

the more unstable phase, i.e., the carbonate apatite (and in the other example the free calcium phosphate), separates out, and only later transforms into the more stable hydroxyapatite through exchange of the anions with bittern. Next, you would have to immediately examine the lattice of the fresh precipitate and check if the more stable hydroxyapatite forms during storage in bittern, which adsorbs during the exchange of CO3, or to be precise PO4, or is retained in the lattice gaps. The day before yesterday, I received the reprints of some X-ray publications from J. Brentano in Manchester. I assume the package is for you. I am therefore sending them to you as printed matter today.

What did the Egloffs say about Tausz and how is he doing in their opinion? Tausz might also be helpful, but whether he can be of use is uncertain. I also wrote to Schnell in the affirmative in response to his request for a recommendation to the American Chemical Society and thanked him for his hospitality towards you. Don’t forget to keep in touch with all well-meaning people! A brief postcard from Cohen is enclosed. Take note of it. It is a shame that you could only visit the most interesting cities briefly. In my opinion, the most beautiful thing in Antwerp is the portrait gallery and you haven’t even seen the Mauritshuis in The Hague. In my opinion, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam would have been more interesting than Rotterdam. Don’t pass it up next time. Seeing Rembrandt is especially a positive experience.
