While Max is hesitant, he eventually will move to the United States and work at the University of Michigan with Fajans.
Max continues to tell his father about the publications he is working on. He is disappointed that publications under Hans Heinrich Franck (1888-1961), his supervisor, are credited as “H.H.F. and employees”.

Lieber Vater!
Anbei schicke ich Dir einen netten Brief von Fajans an mich und einen an Dich. Das Affidavit-Anerbieten ist rührend, aber doch fraglich, ob man es annehmen soll, wenigstens zunächst. Ich bin nicht klar, ob ich dieser Tage an Landis schreiben werde, oder noch warte, bis Dr. F. zurück ist bezw. ich noch mehr Sonderdrucke - der neuen Arbeiten – mitschicken kann. Ich habe gestern von zweien Korrekturen gelesen und sitze über 3 neuen Manuskripten z.Zt.. Ausserdem habe ich schon wieder 2 neue Doktoranden zu betreuen, von denen der eine allerdings nicht ein von mir, sondern vom Prof. vorgeschlagenes Thema, über Calciumsilicide und-silicocynanamide, über die ja schon Wöhler gearbeitet hat, bearbeitet, während der andere auf meinen Vorschlag die Azotierkinetik der verschiedenen Carbidmodifikationen untersucht. Sehr viele Freude macht mir die Chose zur Zeit nicht, einmal weil das Gebiet völlig uninteressant ist und wissenschaftlich zwar vom klassisch-physikalischen-chemischen Standpunkt gesehen / ein paar ganz nette Einzeltatsachen herausgekommen sin, aber moderne Leute wohl auch nicht besonderes interessieren (trotz der freundlichen Bemerkungen von Fajans darüber, der aber auch gleichzeitig auf das mangelnde Interesse anderer daran hinweist). Auch die Überschrift über den einzelnen Seiten der Korrekturen, "H.H.F und Mitarbeiter", oder die Lektüre von Ullmann, wo alle von Franck’s Mitarbeitern gemachten Arbeiten nur unter seinem Namen laufen, ist nicht sehr erfrischend. – Überschrift: „Karfreitagszauber“! Vermutlich werden sich die Verhältnisse bei uns in der nächsten Zeit "klären" müssen! Frühster Kündigungstermin ist der 1. April zum 1. Juli! Vielleicht!? Ich würde es -beinahe- wünschen! Dear Father,
Enclosed, I am sending you a nice letter from Fajans to me and one intended for you. His offer of an affidavit is touching, but it is questionable whether it should be accepted, at least initially. I'm not sure if I'll write to Landis soon or if I'll wait for Dr. F. to return. I can send more reprints of the new publications along with it. Yesterday, I read through two proofread publications and am currently working on 3 new manuscripts. In addition, I have to supervise two new doctoral students, one of whom is working on a topic not suggested by me, but rather a professor regarding calcium silicides and silicocynanamides. Wöhler has already worked on this topic. Per my suggestion, the other student will investigate the azotization kinetics of various carbide modifications. I'm not very happy about this work at the moment. On the one hard, this field is completely uninteresting scientifically when viewed from a traditional physical-chemical perspective. Some interesting facts have emerged, but modern scientists are probably not interested (despite the kind remarks from Fajans about this, he also points out at the same time that others are not interested in the topic). On the other hand, the title of the individual pages with corrections, “H.H.F and employees”, or the publication by Ullmann, in which all of the work was done by Franck’s employees and published under his name, are not very refreshing. The title is: “Good Friday Magic”! Presumably, we will have to “clarify” this situation in the near future! The earliest dates to cancel are from April 1st to July 1st! Maybe? I would almost wish for this! I hope to post the letter before the mail is picked up at 2 o’clock.
