Created by the American Zinc Institute, incorporated in 1919 with a purpose to "promote the welfare of the zinc industry by affording a means of communication between members upon matters bearing upon their business interests." In 1958 the American Zinc Institute joined the Lead Industries Association to form the International Lead Zinc Research Organization.
