Sehr erfreut, dass Sie meiner so freundlich gedenken & verhältnismäßig Günstiges über sich & die Ihrigen berichten, erwiedre ich Ihre Glückwünsche herzlich – sehr kurz, den[n] mir wird jede Zeile bitter schwer & ich habe fast nie Hilfe (selbst m. Bruder schreibe ich nur selten & nur das Nöt[h]igste). Ich führe ein trostloses Dasein in fast absoluter Einsamkeit (trotz der reichen Kurgäste, mit denen ich nicht verkehre, da mich selbst etwas längere Unterhaltung angreift), werde fast jeden Tag & jede Nacht von allerlei Schmerzen & Beschwerden geplagt, bin der Chemie (besonders wegen der zunehmenden Augenschwäche) so entfremdet, dass ich oft wegen m. Ignoranz schaudere. Ein Lichtblick im Dunkel meiner Existenz war das Zusam[m]ensein mit Skita (er war 1927 3 Mal hier), den ich nicht kan[n]te & der mir sehr symphathisch ist. Er war mir auch eine Quelle der Belehrung in den Dingen neueren Datums.

Dear esteemed Colleague,
I am glad that you are thinking about me and told me how you are doing. I would like to reply in kind, but briefly. Each line is difficult for me to write and I don’t have any assistance (I also only write to my brother occasionally and only in an emergency). I lead a desolate existence in almost complete solitude (apartment from the wealthy spa guests, who I do not socialize with because it strains me). Almost every day and night, I am plagued with many kinds of aches and pains. I am so removed from the field of Chemistry (especially because of my increasing vision loss), that I am often horrified by my own ignorance. A ray of light in the darkness of my existence was visiting with Skita, whom I didn’t know but really like (he was here three times in 1927). He was also a source of instruction for me regarding recent developments.
