Portrait of Carroll A. Hochwalt (1900-1987). Hochwalt worked as a chemical engineer for the General Motors Corporation before co-founding Thomas & Hochwalt Laboratories in partnership with Charles Allen Thomas in 1926. After Monsanto Chemical Company acquired Thomas & Hochwalt in 1936, Hochwalt served as director of central research and coordinator of research, patents, and developments until his retirement from Monsanto in 1964. During World War II, Hochwalt worked in Dayton, Ohio as part of the Manhattan District Project and later led a study commissioned by the Atomic Energy Commission examining chemical problems in the field of atomic energy.
