Mein liebes Jungelll!

Dass ich in dieser Zeit ganz besonders oft und herzlich Deiner gedenke, ist ja selbstverständlich. Vielleicht kommt dieser Brief in den Weihnachtstagen zu Dir. Er soll Dir meine innigsten Wünsche bringen. Deinen lieben Brief vom 23.11. habe ich erhalten. Hoffentlich bist Du zur Zeit wieder wohl gesunder. Ich war es bei Euch Chemikern nie anders gewöhnt, als dass Ihr glaubtet die Arbeit ginge nicht od. es sei nichts besonderes and so on und plötzlich gings doch und wurde doch was Rechtes. Auch die Sprachdepressionen sind mir durchaus verständlich u. selbst bekannt. Wahrscheinlich hat das Gehirn auch mal Verdauungszeit nötig u. setzt nach einer Pause der scheinbaren Aufnahmeunfähigkeit wieder neu u. frisch ein. Du wirst in 1 Jahr darüber anders denken. Das haben alle durchgemacht und bei Deinen

Sprachtalent u. Deiner Musikalität wird es baelder soweit sein. Zu C. habe ich immer erlebt, daß die Stipend. verlängert würden und Du darfst auf gar gar keinen Fall nervös werden. Wir glauben alle an Dich!!!

Ich bin froh, daß Du gut aufgehoben bist, hoffentlich schreibst Du mir der Wahrheit gemäßfalls. Leider hast Du nicht geantwortet ob Du einen Kuchen haben willst sodaß Du noch keinen erhältst bisher.
Schreibe doch, ob Du einen willst? Wenn Du einen Weihnachtswunsch hast, so schreibe ihn nur noch, auch wenn er nicht mehr zurecht kommt. Übrigens habe ich Dir die für mich als Schwester erlaubten 10 M. in Nov. u. Dez. geschickt u. hoffe es auch weiterhin so tun zu dürfen.

Vater war ein bisschen erkältet, ist aber jetzt wieder ganz munter. Viktor ist heute Abend bei ihm und sie werden bestimmt viel von Dir sprechen. Ich habe mich extra beurlaubt, um den Abend mit Dir zu verbringen, denn die Zeit muß ich mir geradezu stehlen. Z.Z. werden 5 Zimmer tapeziert u. da steht ziemlich das ganze Haus auf dem Kopf. Ich habe doch nur die 2 alten Mädchen. Die Idee einen Engländer für die Kinder werde ich wohl aufgeben müßen. Da Frl. B. nun fort ist, werde ich mir jetzt in ihrem einzigen Zimmer eine kleine Webewerkstatt einrichten. Ob ich aber dazu komme ist eine andere Frage. Die Kinder, der Haushalt u. später dann die nötigen Gesellschaftspflichten fressen einen auf! Wenigsten habe ich keine Zeit zum Nachdenken u. das ich wohl immer das beste. Zum Großen und Ganzen geht es uns sehr gut.

Das Buch über Kunst habe ich Dir übrigens nicht gesandt. Das hast Du mißverstanden in meinem Brief vom 13.11.37. Die 4 Andenken an Mutter hast Du hoffentlich nicht vergessen. Ich habe die Kinder fotografieren lassen u. schicke Dir bald Bilder

von Ihnen. Vater möchte wissen, ob Du seine Briefe Nr. 49 u. 50 bekommen hast. Ich rief eben an, um zu fragen, ob Viktor auch „brav“ sei und hörte, dass Vater u. Vi. sich gerade darüber unterhielten wie die Ekliptik, die auf dem Dir geschenkten Globus drauf ist, von den Kindern zu erklären sei. Probleme! Na wir haben außerdem ja auch noch andere u. ich bin immer glücklich, wenn Vater sich über derlei den Kopf mal zerbricht. Wolfgang hat uns neulich mit einem reizenden Geschichtchen erfreut, das ich Dir demnächst schicke. Beim Mittagessen spielt sich doch immer so allerhand bei uns ab u. da gerade ein Vogelhäuschen aufgehängt war, rief ich ihn zu einer Geschichte: „Was ein Spatz von H’s erzählt.“ Was er sofort aufgreift und…na Du wirst ja sehen. Aber es sind nicht nur heitere Seiten natürlich sonst. Also, mein liebes Jungel, bleibe gesund und sei nicht nervös, sondern freue Dich alles Gute und Lieben und Schönen, das Dir leuchtet!

Dear Lad,

It goes without saying that I naturally think of you very often during this time. Maybe you will receive this letter over Christmas. It should convey my heartfelt wishes to you. I received your nice letter from November 23rd. I hope your health is better now. With you chemists, I have never known anything else, other than you all thought your work wasn’t going well or it wasn’t anything special and so on, and then suddenly it turned out well! I know what you mean about issues with a new language. That is understandable. The brain probably needs time to process everything. After a break, it will apparently recharge. You will think differently about it in 1 year. Everyone has experienced that and with your

talent for languages and musicality, you will soon catch on. With chemists, I have always heard that scholarships are extended. You must not become anxious under any circumstances. We all believe in you!!!

I’m glad you’re in good hands. I hope you're writing to me truthfully. Unfortunately, you didn't answer if you wanted a cake, so you haven’t received one yet. Do write if you want one! If you have a Christmas wish, just tell me about it, even if it doesn’t arrive on time. By the way, I sent you 10 Marks (which I am allowed to do as your sister) in November and December and I hope to be able to continue to do so.

Father had a small cold, but he’s better now. Viktor is with him tonight and I’m sure they’ll be talking a lot about you. I didn’t go so I could spend the evening writing to you. I really must find the time. At the moment, five rooms are being wall-papered and the whole house is pretty much upside down. I only have the two old maids. I’ll probably have to give up the idea of hiring Englishman to tutor the children. Now that Ms. B. is gone, I'm going to set up a small weaving workshop in her room. Whether I’ll actually do this is another question. The children, the household, and other required social obligations eat up all your time! At least I don’t have time to think too much and that’s probably for the best. Overall, we are doing very well.

By the way, I didn’t send you the book about art. You misunderstood that in my letter from November 13, 1937. Hopefully, you haven't forgotten mother’s four keepsakes. I had the children photographed and will send you their pictures soon.

Father wants to know if you received his letters #49 and #50. I just called to ask whether Viktor is also behaving “well” and heard that Father and Viktor were just talking about how the children could explain the ecliptic, which is on the globe they gave you. What problems! Well, we also have other ones and I'm always happy when father racks his brains over such things. Wolfgang recently delighted us with a charming little story that I will send you shortly. At lunchtime, there is always a lot going on around here. Since a bird house had just been hung up, I asked him to tell a story: “What a sparrow says about the Homburgers.” What he picks up on right away…well, you’ll see. It’s not always cheerful, of course. My dear lad, stay healthy and don’t be nervous. Rather, enjoy all the positive, loving, and beautiful things that are shining upon you!
