The degree recognizes his contributions to the study of several alkaloids and a new heterocyclic free radical. In 1929, Julian received a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship that enabled him to pursue a doctorate in chemistry. He chose to study natural products chemistry under Ernst Späth (1886-1946) at the University of Vienna, where his research focused on the chemistry of plant-derived compounds.
