  <dc:description>Percy Lavon Julian&#x2019;s (1899&#x2013;1975) framed doctoral diploma from the University of Vienna. The degree recognizes his contributions to the study of several alkaloids and a new heterocyclic free radical.

In 1929, Julian received a Rockefeller Foundation fellowship that enabled him to pursue a doctorate in chemistry. He chose to study natural products chemistry under Ernst Sp&#xE4;th (1886-1946) at the University of Vienna, where his research focused on the chemistry of plant-derived compounds.
