Mein lieber Maxel!

Das war hübsch, dass Du diese Woche noch mal geschrieben hast; so bekamen wir gestern Briefe von Euch Beiden! Ich freue mich, daß der Vortrag gut vorüber gegangen ist; ich erzählte Herrn Dr. Mark davon, der mit seiner Frau Dienstag zum Abendbrot bei uns war. –

Gestern kam beiliegender Brief von Fajans; Ich hatte Fajans wegen des event. Termin Deines event. Eintrittes wegen anderes Sommerreisetermins angefragt. Du siehst daraus, daß es unbedingt nötig ist, baldigst die Antwort der Notgem. für Göttingen zu erfahren; denn da Fajans erst nach diesen Anfragen will, so kannst Du auf diese Antwort womöglich wieder monatelang warten. Vielleicht stellst Du das Herrn Pohl noch einmal an damit dieser mahnt. Du hättest dann jedenfalls bis 1. Okt. Ferien, eine schöne lange Zeit. Ich denke, dass Marianne gegen d. 18 August zu Haus ist, u. Du dann auch herkommst. Willst

Du aber schon gleich Anfang August nach Haus kommen, so müßten wir des nun bald wissen, da wir dann erst im Sept. fortgehen können. Sonst wäre es doch am besten, daß wir alle bis 19 oder 20. Aug. fort wären u. dann alle zusammen zu Haus wären. Kaethe hat mir sogar für d. 15. um 9 Uhr schon gekündigt, so dass die Schwierigkeiten noch großer werden, u. es noch dringlicher wird, bald zu wissen, was wir machen. Es geht uns nicht gerade schlecht. Vater ist sehr abgespannt u. braucht eine Erholung sehr; er soll nach Dr. Schiller, der mich neulich untersucht hat, gegen Gallenbeschwerden etwas tun, nach Karlsbad oder Mergentheim gehen; das kann ich in entweder in August oder auch in Sept. Für den Vater ist es nicht grade das Wichtigste, u. ich überlege immer, ob ich nach Halle-Salle sein u. lieber mit ihm irgendwo in die Höhe gehen soll. Es ist ein schwieriges Problem! – Heurige Häschen sind wir nicht mehr, aber mir geht es angeblich nicht schlecht. –

Wir freuen uns sehr, daß Pohl Du das Anerbieten bis Weihnachten gemacht hat, u. daß die Arbeit vorwärts geht. – Dein Bild ist gar nicht schön, mein Bübel.

Die Aufnahme ist ja so grau, u. flau, wahrscheinlich unterbelichtet. Die kannst Du keinesfalls weitergeben. Auch hast Du wieder nicht auf den recht weitklaffenden Anzug geachtet, was so unschön aussieht! Ich wünsche mir nun wie schon voriges Jahr zu meinem 50. Geburtstag ein richtiges Bild von Dir u. Marianne! Hoffentlich erfüllst Du diesen Wünsch! Aber vom richtigen, guten Photographen. Vater will es auch.

Das Gesandte kannst Du nicht an die I.G. schicken. Es ist ja eine so schlechte Aufnahme. Stellung ganz nett, Ausdruck auch; aber so flau! – Könnte es vielleicht verstärkt werden? Morgen schicke ich die Wäsche ab. Wären Deine Anzüge, Schuhe vor Allem, noch gut genug zum Reisen in Deutschland? Dein Koffer müßtest Du vorher noch Ende Juli herschicken, daß ich ihn noch abnehmen könnte. – Kaethe Hochzeit soll am 17. od. 19 sein; ich schreibe es Dir noch; sie wird ganz klein gefeiert. Ich denke es ist also nicht so nötig, eher bei der Kirche am 21., aber nicht zu lange! Ich bin heute etwas eilig, da ich ins Theater „Volpone“ gehen will. Sei gesund u. schreibe bald wieder. –

My dear Max,

It was nice that you wrote again last week. We received letters from both of you yesterday. I told Dr. Mark about it, who was here with his wife for dinner on Tuesday.

Yesterday, the enclosed letter arrived from Fajans. I asked Fajans about your possible start date because of your summer travels. As a result, you can see that it is absolutely necessary to find out the answer from the funding agency in Gottingen as soon as possible. Since Fajans only wants to do this after the inquiry, you could possibly wait months for an answer. Maybe you should ask Mr. Pohl again so that he can remind them. In any case, you would have vacation until October 1st. What a nice long time! I think that Marianne will come home around August 18th, and you will come here too.

However, if you want to come home at the beginning of August, we should know that soon, especially since we won’t be able to leave until September. Otherwise, it would be best if we were all on vacation until August 19th or 20th and then we could all be at home together. Käthe gave me her notice for August 15th at 9 a.m. Things will become ever more difficult and it is even more urgent know what we're doing soon. We're not doing badly. Father is very tired and needs to rest. He is supposed to visit Dr. Schiller, who recently examined me to do something about gallbladder problems. I should go to Karlsbad or Bad Mergentheim. I can do that in either August or September. It’s not exactly the most important thing for Father, and I’m constantly thinking about whether I should go to Halle-Salle and go somewhere in the mountains with him. It's a tricky problem! We're not that young anymore, but I'm supposedly fine.

We are glad that Pohl made you an offer until Christmas and that your work is progressing. Your picture is not nice at all, my boy.

The picture is so gray and dull. It’s probably underexposed. You can certainly not give this picture to anyone. You also didn't pay attention to your rather wide gaping suit, which looks so ugly! Like last year, I would like a real picture of you and Marianne for my 50th birthday! I hope you fulfill my wish, but with the right photographer. Father wants one too.

You cannot send this picture to I.G. It’s such a bad copy. Your positioning and expression are quite nice, but so flat! Could the image perhaps be sharpened? I’ll send off the laundry tomorrow. Would your suits, and above all shoes, still be suitable for traveling in Germany? You would have to send your suitcase here at the end of July so that I could store it. Käthe's wedding is supposed to be on the 17th or the 19th. I’ll write you about the details. It will be a small celebration. It’s not that necessary, but it should be in the church on the 21st. However, it shouldn’t take long. I’m in a bit of a hurry today because I want to go to the Volpone Theater. Be well and write again soon.
