Distribution law or Nernst's distribution law gives a generalization governing the distribution of a solute between two nonmiscible solvents. This law was first given by Walther Nernst (1864-1941) who studied the distribution of several solutes between different appropriate pairs of solvents.

The law states: C1/C2 = Kd Where Kd is the distribution coefficient or the partition coefficient, C1 denotes the concentration of solute X in solvent A, snd C2 denotes the concentration of solute X in solvent B.
