Sehr geehrter Herr Doktor,

heute erhielt ich ein Kabel aus Spanien – abgeschickt am 14. Mai: “American Visa issued awaiting Portuguese visa hope reach next boat…” Wäre es Ihnen möglich herauszukriege, wann das nächste Boot und ev. das übernächste hier eintreffen? Auch wäre ich Ihnen sehr dankbar, wenn Sie Ihren Bekannten fragen könnten, wie lange die Reise von Lissabon nach Philadelphia gedauert hat, denn es ist anzunehmen, dass Hochwald nach seiner Ankunft in Lissabon ein Kabel schickt, und wir könnten dann auch rechnen, wann er frühstens zu erwarten ist.

Unklar ist mir, was unmittelbar nach seiner Ankunft geschehen soll. Ich habe

keinerlei Erfahrung, ob in irgendeiner Weise und in welcher…auf die jud. Organisationen zu rechnen ist. Ich nehme allerdings an, dass ihm sein Bruder etwas Geld zur Verfügung stellt, und er sich zunächst einmal im Osten umschauen kam. Ihre Erfahrungen und Ratschläge werden von besonderer Wichtigkeit für ihn sein. Ich beabsichtige nach New York (Philadelphia) zu kommen und hoffe ihm gleich bei seiner Ankunft begrüssen zu können, doch muss ich das ein wenig von meiner Verpflichtungen hier abhängig machen. Mit der Schule werde ich in Hudson Ende des Monats fertig, doch fühle ich mich – moralisch – verpflichtet meine im vergangenen Sommer begonnene Religionsgeschichtliche Bibliographie vor dem 1. Juli fertig zu machen, da nur noch ein kleiner Teil fehlt, und das von der Universität dazu bewilligte Geld am 1. Juli verfällt. Ich hoffe, dass eine Verlängerung des Termins bewilligt wird, aber ich weiss es nicht.

Darf ich Sie fragen: von welchem Teile des Landes – oder in welcher Stadt – sich ev. für Hoch ein Tätigkeitsfeld bieten würde - falls sie die Firma von der Sie mir einmal schrieben – noch für ihn interessieren sollte?

Inzwischen ist es sogar hier in unserer kalten Ecke Frühling geworden.

Dear Dr. Bredig,

Today, I received a telegram from Spain, which was sent on May 14th. It said: “American Visa issued awaiting Portuguese visa hope reach next boat…” Would it be possible for you to find out when the next ship and possibly the one after that will arrive here? I would also be very grateful if you could ask your acquaintance how long the journey from Lisbon to Philadelphia took, because it can be assumed that Hochwald will send a telegram after his arrival in Lisbon. With this in mind, we could then estimate when to expect him at the earliest.

I am not sure what will happen immediately after his arrival.

I have no idea whether or not the Jewish organizations can help in any way and how. However, I assume that Hochwald’s brother made some money available to him when he visited the East Coast. Your experiences and advice will be especially important for him. I plan to come to New York (Philadelphia) and hope to be able to greet him as soon as he arrives. However, I must plan this around my responsibilities here. I’ll finish my education in Hudson at the end of the month. However, I feel morally obliged to finish my religious history bibliography, which I started last summer, before July 1st. Only a small part is still missing, and my university funds expire on July 1st. I hope that an extension will be granted, but I don’t know.

May I ask you in which part of the country or in which city Hochwald could find employment, especially if the company you once wrote to me about would still be interested in him?

Spring has finally arrived in our cold corner of the country.
