Lieber Vater!

Soeben habe ich Deinen lieben Brief vom 28. November erhalten, auf den ich so sehr gewartet hatte. Gestern hatte ich schon eine Ansichtskarte per S.S. Bremen an Euch abgesandt, will aber heute noch rasch Deinen Brief beantworten.

Zunächst eine sehr erfreuliche Neuigkeit: Ich habe mit 95% Wahrscheinlichkeit eine gute Stellung! Eben rief mich der Sekretär des Präsidenten der Vanadium Corporation of America an, (aus New York!), dass sie mich $300.-monatlich (entspr. ca RM 750.- auch in der Kaufkraft) engagieren! Ich muss natürlich noch den schriftlichen Abschluss abwarten, aber da es sich um eine sehr angesehene Firm mittlerer Grösse handelt, ist wohl an den Worten nicht zu zweifeln. Der Ort meiner Arbeit ist noch durch mich selbst zu bestimmen, nachdem ich mich näher mit meiner Aufgabe vertraut gemacht haben werde, durch Literaturstudium etc. Es kommt das Hauptbüro in New York (ohne Labor) oder der Sitz der Fabrik (Bridgeville, Vorstadt von Pittsburgh) in Frage. Es soll die Production von V-Verbidnungen gefördert werden durch Auffindung neuer erwendungsmöglichkeiten in Catalyse, Pigmenten, Glaesern etc... Dies ist durch Contakt mit den bisherigen Verbrauchern und einige Forschung zu bewerkstelligen. Ich bin sehr erfreut über diese Art der Arbeit, sie führt doch wesentlich über das handwerksmässige meiner bisherigen Tätigkeiten hinaus und von meiner unglückseligen Röntgenspezialisierung hinweg! Hoffentlich bin ich der Aufgabe auch gewachsen. Es scheint sich aber auch um besonders angenehme und verständnisvolle Vorgesetzte zu handeln! Der Betreffende war mir vom ersten Augenblick an sehr sympathisch, auch derjenige durch den die Sache vermittelt wurde. Über mehrer Ecken, ist es letzlich eine Verbindung über Helfman! Ich hoffe, dass ich Euch, noch bevor Ihr diesen Brief erhalten habt, in einem kurzen Telegramm bestätigt habe, dass ich inzwischen auch schriftliches über die Stellung in Händen habe, was, hoffe ich, übermorgen der Fall sein sollte.

Ich hoffe, dass das eine gute Weihnachtsnachricht ist!

Ich werde Euch auch sofort mitteilen, oder bei Erhalt dieses Briefes durch Dich, schon mitgeteilt haben, dass ich nun mein eigenes Affidavit für Viktor schicke! Ich bitte Euch nun irgendwie festzustellen zu suchen (was vielleicht nicht so sehr leicht sein mag) ob der Consul auch noch mein Affidavit für Euch andern alle als ausreichen betrachten würde! Für Dich selbst hoff ich Aff. von Deinen hiesigen Schülern und Freunden zu erwirken, bin dessen aber noch nicht ganz sicher. Aber irgend wie wird dergl. schon klappen. Bisher stehen Faj. und ich in dieser Sache mit Creigh. und Oesp. in Verbindung, die andern würden auch noch dran kommen, wenn nötig. Beim Consul selbst anzur. ist wohl nicht richtig. Ich würde natürlich gerne gleich mein AFF. für Euch alle sechs ausstellen, glaube aber, dass es richtiger ist, um sicher zu sein, dass es auch

als von Wert anerkannt wird, wenn ich es zunächst nur für V. beschränke. Wenn Ihr anderer Meinung sein solltet, lass es mich umgehend wissen. – Über V.‘s Bescheid nach New York habe ich hier durch Fridl.H. erfahren. – Leider habe ich gar keine Vorstellung, was die Nummer, die Ihr bekommen habt, hinsichtlich der Wartezeit bedeuten kann. Hoffentlich ist es nicht so lange!

Mein Vermögen hatte ich zu Rm für Stand vom 27.April angegeben. Es ist ziemlich genau gleich viel am Nov.12., da ich zwar hier mehrere hundert Dollar ausgegeben, aber etwa den gleichen Betrag in Berlin durch Carenzzahlungen auf Sperrkonto eingenommen habe. Letztere Zahlungen betrugen ca 1530. -RM für die Zeit vom 31.April bis 30.September. Seit 1.Oktober habe ich keine Zahlungen mehr erhalten, da ein neuer Antrag seitens der Werke auf Einzahlung der weiteren Beträge notwendig war. Ich habe diesen mitgeteilt, das ich kein Einkommen hier mehr habe, sodass sie mir nun ca. RM650.- pro Monat hätten auf Sperrkonto überwiesen müssen, oder auch Transferantrag stellen können. Da ich vermutlich ab 1.Januar hier mehr als 650.- verdienen werde, sie mir also dann nichts mehr zu bezahlen brauchen, schulden sie mir für 3 Monate, das ist 3 mal ca 650.- = 1800.- Ich habe aber auf meinen Brief vom Oktober, in dem ich ihnen meine Arbeitslosigkeit mitgeteilt hatte noch nichts gehört, vermutlich weil der Antrag schwebt.

Wenn es mit den Zeitschriften nicht klappen sollte, wäre es schade, aber nicht zu ändern, wohl.

Meine Addresse in der Zwischenzeit, war die von Bekannten, die während meiner und Fajans’s Reise für meine Post Sorge trugen. Jetzt schreibt ihr tatsächlich wieder besser an Faj. Addresse, nachdem ich hier bald wohl nach New York oder Pittsburgh -hoffentlich – werde übersiedeln müssen.
Ich habe jetzt, wie Ihr Euch denken könnt, rasend zu tun und will daher jetzt schliessen. Heute sieht die Welt ein wenig rosiger aus, so wird es uns wohl allen gehen, mal so, mal so,! In diesem optimistischen Sinne seid alle recht herzlich gegrüsst

Dear Father,

I just received your letter from November 28th, which I had been expecting. Yesterday, I sent a postcard to you all via the S.S. Bremen but want to quickly answer your letter today.

I have some good news! There is a 95% chance that I have a position! The secretary of the president of the Vanadium Corporation of America just called me from New York with an offer of $300 per month (approximately 700 Reichsmarks, which is also the exact currency value)! Naturally, I must wait on the written offer, but since it a very well-respected medium sized company, I don’t doubt what they say. I can decide on the location of my work after I become more familiar with the position through studying scientific literature and the like. The company headquarters in New York (without a laboratory) or the factory headquarters in Bridgeville, a suburb of Pittsburgh, are both possible. The production of vanadium compounds will be promoted by finding new application possibilities in catalysis, pigment, and glass. This can be achieved through research and contact with previous consumers. I am very happy about this type of work because it lends itself to my previous experience working in the laboratory and my unfortunate specialization in X-ray technology. I hope I am up to the task. The management seems very pleasant and understanding. From the outset, my future supervisor and the employee who conveyed the offer were very kind. Although I traversed many paths, I was ultimately successful with Mr. Helfman’s contact. Even before you all receive this letter, I hope to confirm in a short telegram that I have received the written offer. This should happen the day after tomorrow.

I hope this is good news in time for Christmas!

I will also let you all know immediately when I send my own affidavit for Viktor. You will also have found out after receiving this letter. I request that you all find out from the Consul (which might not be so easy) if my affidavit for all of you would be sufficient. Father, I hope to receive affidavits for you from your students and friends here, but I am not entirely sure. It will work out somehow. Up to this point, Fajans and I have been in touch with Creighton and Oesp. about this. If necessary, the others would also help. It would not be appropriate to call the Consul. I would gladly complete affidavits for all six of you.

However, for it to be deemed of value, I think it would be best to just complete one for Viktor at first. If you all have a different option, please let me know immediately. I heard about Viktor’s decision to settle in New York from Fridl H. Unfortunately, I don’t have any idea how long you all must wait based on the number you received. Hopefully it is not too long.

I stated the value of my assets in Reichsmarks up until April 27th. It’s pretty much the same value as November 12th. Although I spent hundreds of dollars here, I received the same amount in Berlin in my blocked account through compensation payments. For the period of April 31st to September 30th, the last payments amounted to approximately 1,530 Reichsmarks. I haven’t received any more payments since October 1st because the company would have to submit a new application to deposit anything further. I told them that I no longer have an income here, so that they would have to transfer approximately 650 Reichsmarks a month to my blocked account. They can also submit a transfer application. Since I will earn more than 650 Reichsmarks here from January 1st onward, they won’t have to pay me anymore and will owe me for 3 months. That is 3x 650 Reichsmarks, which equals 1,800 Reichsmarks. I haven’t received a response to my letter from October, in which I notified them of my unemployment, presumably because the application is pending.

It would be a shame if it didn’t work out with the journals, but this won’t change.

My last address was the address of my acquaintances who took care of the mail while Fajans and I were away. You should probably write to me at Fajans’ address again, especially since I will probably have to relocate to New York or Pittsburgh.

As you can imagine, I am very busy and would like to conclude for today. Today, the world seems more positive. I hope this will be the case for all of us one day. On this optimistic note, warm regards to everyone.
