Abschrift aus Brief von Fajans an Bredig – Karlsruhe.
Lieber Herr Professor!
Ich habe von Herrn Pohl noch keine Nachricht, dass Stipendiumfrage für Max-Albert von der Notgemeinschaft erledigt sei. Herr Pohl bat mich, aber mit einer neuen Eingabe zu warten, bis die seinige geklärt ist. Nun kommen bald Ferien und die massgebenden Personen werden schwer zu erreichen sein, eine baldige Entscheidung wäre deshalb von Wichtigkeit. Sie schrieben von der Möglichkeit, über die Frage mit Herrn Stock zu sprechen. Falls es Ihnen nicht unangenehm ist, wäre ich Ihnen dafür sehr dankbar.
Es wäre mir vom grossem Wert, zum mindesten zu erfahren, an wen man sich wenden könnte, um Näheres über den Stand der Angelegenheit zu erfahren. Reis wird Ihnen vielleicht erwähnt haben, dass ich einen Ruf auf das Ordinariat der phys. Chemie an der Universität in Warschau erhalten habe.
Im September werde ich in Warschau sein und mir die Verhältnisse an Ort und Stelle näher ansehen.

Heute erhielt ich einen Brief von Prof. Fajans, dessen Abschrift (in der Hauptsache) ich Dir hier beilege. Ausserdem lege ich noch einen Teil der Abschrift (ohne die Berufungsgeschichte) hier extra bei, so dass Du diesen Extra-Teil (ohne diese) Herrn Pohl zeigen kannst. Jetzt müssen wir endlich wissen, woran wir sind. – Wenn überhaupt

Herr Fajans den Ruf nach Warschau annimmt, was mir ziemlich unsicher scheint, wird er wohl mindestens noch in Winter 27/28 u. vielleicht auch noch bis Herbst 28 in München sein. Wenn das Stipendium auf Dich persönlich lautet, würde dieser Fortgang von Fajans wohl nicht viel daran ändern. Ev. bleibest Du dann eben bei einem anderen Professor in Deutschland. Ich würde vorläufig von dem Warschauer Ruf von Fajans noch nicht viel reden.

Dear Professor,
I have not yet heard from Mr. Pohl that the scholarship issue for Max-Albert has been settled by the German Science Funding Association. Mr. Pohl asked me to wait to submit a new petition until this has been clarified. Holidays are coming soon, and the key people will be difficult to reach. Hence, a prompt decision would be important. You wrote about the possibility of discussing the issue with Mr. Stock. If you don’t mind, I would be incredibly grateful.
It would be beneficial to me to at least know whom to contact to find out more about the status of the matter. Reis may have mentioned to you that I was offered a professorship in the Department of Physical Chemistry at the University of Warsaw.
In September, I will be in Warsaw and will take a closer look at the circumstance there.

Dear Max,
Today, I received a letter from Professor Fajans, the copy of which I am enclosing (most importantly) for you here. I am also enclosing part of the copy (without Fajans’ professorship appointment story) here so that you can show this extra part to Mr. Pohl. Now, we finally must know where we stand with the matter.

If Mr. Fajans accepts the appointment in Warsaw after all, which seems rather uncertain to me, he will probably be in Munich at least in the winter of 1927/1928, and maybe even until the autumn of 1928. If the scholarship is for you personally, Fajans’ departure would probably not change that much. You would then possibly collaborate with another professor in Germany. For the time being, I wouldn’t say much about Fajans’ offer in Warsaw.
