Photograph of James Wilson, Secretary of Agriculture from 1897 to 1913, seated in a horse-drawn carriage with an unidentified African American driver. Wilson's tenure as Secretary is regarded as a period distinguished by the modernization of agricultural methods, as well as the expansion of food inspection practices. Prior to his tenure as Secretary, Wilson was a professor of agriculture at Iowa State Agricultural College (now Iowa State University), where he advised George Washington Carver.
