Liebe Ilse,

Sie werden sich gewundert haben, dass ich über die Entwickelung des Falls Hochwald so gar nichts geschrieben habe, doch bin ich erst seit gestern in der Lage etwas zu berichten. Ich hatte an Hochwald mit bezahlter Rückantwort gekabelt – keine Antwort. Ich hatte die Joint mit Anfragen „belästigt“ und von Miss Plummer die Antwort bekommen, dass sie auch nichts wüssten. Ich hatte mich mit den Unitarians in Verbindung gesetzt und von ihnen ausweichende Antworten bekommen, wie: Alles ginge langsam aber vorschriftsmäßig usw. Werner Hochwald, der der Hias $250 überwies, ging auf meinen Vorschlag an den Konsul zu kabeln nicht ein, weil die Joint ihm mitgeteilt hatte, dass ihr Vertreter in Europa sich mit dem Fall eingehend befasse. Wobei es sich aber wohl möglicherweise um "wishful thinking" handelt, da die Joint zwar 2mal nach Lissabon kabelte – einmal die Tatsache des Visums und das 2. Mal wegen des Geldes – aber – wie ich

von Miss Plummer weiss – keine Antwort erhielt gestern man als ich von Minneapolis zurück nach Hudson kam, fand ich einen Brief von Miss Plummer und ein Kabel von Hochwald vor. Miss Plummer (früher Pulvermacher – jetzt bei der Joint angestellt) teilt mir mit, dass sie aus Lissabon einen Brief mit der neuesten Liste der aus Miranda freigelassenen Leute erhalten haben und dass Hochwalds Name darauf sei – aber keine Adresse, und dass die Lissaboner auch sonst nichts über ihn berichtet hätten. Ob ich etwa wisse, wo er sei! Ja, und das weiss ich: Hochwalds Kabel lautet: "Hope I can sail June for Philadelphia. No letters since October. Cable well-being. Love Fritz Hochwald. Hotel Magerit Madrid (840 A.)" Die Zeit steht unter Madrid.

Ein beängstigender Text, der meine schlimmsten Befürchtungen bestätigt. Närrisch, dass es niemand fuer nötig gehalten hat. Hochwald mitzuteilen, dass er ein amerikan. Visum hat. Meine beiden Kabel sind nicht angekommen – meine Briefe nach dem Camp und

amerikan. Konsulat Madrid (Please forward!) auch nicht. Die Joint wird kaum mit ihm darüber verhandelt haben, denn sonst wüssten sie ja, wo er wäre und würden auch über etwaige Fortschritte was melden. Ob ich verrückt geworden bin?, da Hochwald ja sailing und "Philadelphia" erwähnt. Es besteht die Möglichkeit, dass ich Gespenster sehe. Vielleicht fahren die portgues. Boote neuerdings nach Philadelphia. Aber warum schreibt er nicht New York oder Amerika oder sonst was?? Und warum verleiht er seiner Freunde nicht mehr Ausdruck?! Weil "Philadelphia" meines Erachtens ein Code-Wort ist und für Palästina steht. Hochwald gibt Mexico und Palästinas stets Codenamen. Bachstetz Country Mex. My sister’s country Palestine u.s.w… unmöglich in einem Kabel, und wir haben öfters in Briefen Namen so verdreht, dass nur Anfang und Ende richtig waren. Vielleicht spinne ich – vielleicht auch nicht, denn meine Nachrichten hat er ja nicht – auf Committees gebe ich gar nichts

und der Konsul hat ihn bestimmt nicht benachrichtigt, dass er ein Visum hat, der geht wohl davon aus, dass die Leute, die sich nicht selbst melden, eben nicht interessiert sind, und das amerikanisch. Konsulat ihnen natürlich nicht nachläßt!!! Und wir kennen ja die Einstellung dieser Leute zum Genüge. Laut Unitarians gehen ca 50% der Kabel durch, die anderen verschwinden sang-und klanglos auf dem Wege. Ich will aber nun sofort kabeln und möchte noch ein paar mehr Leute bewegen zu kabeln und falls ich nicht sofort Antwort erhalte – aus Spanien – will ich ev. über Senator Ball, der aber möglicherweise nicht in Washington ist – um den Konsul Kabeln und um Aufklärung bitten.

Liebe Ilse, wollen Sie mir einen grossen Gefallen tun und das spanische Konsulat oder die Embassy oder ein span. Reisebüro anrufen und fragen, ob es ein Hotel Margerit in Madrid gibt und wo das ist und wenn nicht – fragen, was so ähnlich kling – Margerit etwas oder was sonst.

Die können im Telefonbuch nachschauen. Bitte tun Sie das nach Erhalt meines Briefes sofort und telegraphieren Sie, wenn es das Hotel nicht gibt oder wenn der Name anders ist. Bitte telegraphieren Sie an einem Wochentage nach Hudson, Wisconsin z.B. wenn Sie diesen Brief Donnerstag bekommen – wie ich hoffe – rufen Sie bitte die Leute gleich an – und telegraphieren Sie mir noch am Donnerstag „collect“ hierher. Dienstag fahre ich am Mittag nach Minneapolis und bin dort bis Sonntag Nachmittag 513-6th Avenue Southeast. Nehmen Sie mir bitte die Zumutung nicht übel, aber ich habe im Falle Hochwalds immer meine Ängste und Namen kommen sofort verstümmelt an, und es wäre Blödsinn die Kabel an eine falsche Adresse zu richten.

Seien Sie nicht böse, dass ich einen so langen Wish geschrieben, aber es ist schon vom Lessing bemerkt worden, dass lange Briefe leicht als kurze – präzise – zu schreiben sind – und ich sitze hier in der Schule

wäre schön, weil ich lieber von Hudson aus kable um Hochwald nicht zu verwirren. Er weiss nicht wie nah Hudson bei Minneapolis ist usw. und würde denken, ich sei hier rausgeflogen.

Bitten teilen Sie Dr. Bredig die neueste Entwicklung mit. Vielleicht wissen Sie alle in New York viel besser Bescheid und lachen mich aus… und "Philadelphia" bedeutet Philadelphia. Ich wäre Ihnen für Ratschläge und Eindrucke dankbar.

Vielleicht klärt sich alles bald auf – ich halte aber Eile für geboten – über die Tatsache des Palästinavisums, das Hochwald im November erhielt – erfuhr er zufällig wie er bitter bemerkte, Anfang Februars. (Brief vom 8. Februar)

Hoffentlich geht es Ihnen gut – bitten danken Sie auch Dr. Bredig für seinen letzten Brief. Ich schreibe sobald ich mehr weiss und hoffe inzwischen von Ihnen zu erfahren, wie Sie zu dem Falle stehen und ob’s das Hotel gibt.

Dear Ilse,

You may have been surprised that I didn’t write anything at all about the development of Hochwald’s case, but I’ve only been able to share some news since yesterday. I had cabled Hochwald with a paid reply but didn’t receive a response. I had “bothered” Joint with inquiries and received a reply from Ms. Plummer that they didn’t know anything either. I had contacted the Unitarians and received evasive answers from them, such as everything was going slowly but according to plan, etc. Werner Hochwald, who transferred $250 to Hias, did not consider my suggestion to cable the Consul because Joint had informed him that their representative in Europe was dealing thoroughly with the case. However, this may very well be “wishful thinking”, since Joint cabled Lisbon twice - once regarding the visa and once regarding the money.

However, as I found out from Ms. Plummer, no reply was received yesterday. When I returned to Hudson from Minneapolis, I found a letter from Ms. Plummer and a cable from Hochwald. Ms. Plummer (formerly Pulvermacher- now employed by Joint) tells me that they have received a letter from Lisbon with the latest list of people released from Miranda and that Hochwald’s name is on it. However, there is no address and the people in Lisbon didn’t say anything about him. Do I know anything about where he is? Yes, and I know that. Hochwald’s cable read “Hope I can sail (in) June for Philadelphia. No letters Cable well-being. Love Fritz Hochwald. Hotel Magerit Madrid (840 A.)” It is Madrid time.

This is a frightening message that confirms my worst fears. It was foolish that no one thought it necessary to inform Hochwald that he has an American visa. My two cables didn’t arrive.

The same goes for my letters to the camp and the American Consulate in Madrid. Joint would not have handled this for him. Otherwise, they would know where he was and would also share news of any progress. Have I gone crazy? Especially since Hochwald mentions sailing and “Philadelphia.” Perhaps I am seeing ghosts. Maybe the Portuguese ships are now sailing to Philadelphia. However, why doesn’t he write New York or America or something similar? Moreover, why doesn’t he share more information with his friends? I think “Philadelphia” is a code word and stands for Palestine. Hochwald always gives codenames for Mexico and Palestine. “Bachstetz country” means Mexico. “My sister’s country” means Palestine. It’s impossible to write in a cable and we often got names mixed up in letters so that only the first and last letters were correct. Maybe I'm crazy - maybe not. He doesn’t have my messages and I don’t care about committees.

Moreover, the Consul certainly didn’t inform him that he had a visa. He probably assumes that the people who don’t register themselves aren't interested, and that the American consulate won’t let him go!! Furthermore, we know these people’s attitude well enough. According to Unitarians, about 50% of the cables go through and the others simply disappear along the way. Yet I want to cable now and would like to get a few more people to cable. If I don’t receive an answer from Spain immediately, perhaps I should send a cable to the Consul via Senator Ball, who may not be in Washington, and request clarification.

Dear Ilse, would you do me a huge favor and call the Spanish Consulate, the Embassy, or a Spanish travel agency and ask if there is a Hotel Margerit in Madrid and where it is? If not, ask if there is something that sound likes Margerit or a similar word.

They can look it up in the phone book. Please do so immediately upon receiving my letter and telegraph if the hotel does not exist or if the name is different. Please telegraph Hudson, Wisconsin on a weekday. For example, if you receive this letter on Thursday, which I hope, please call the people right away and telegraph me here “collect” on Thursday. I will drive to Minneapolis on Tuesday afternoon and will be there at 513-6th Avenue Southeast until Sunday afternoon. Please don’t be offended by my impoliteness. However, with regards to Hochwald’s case, I am always scared. Names immediately arrive that are illegible and it wouldn’t make sense to send a cable to the wrong address.

Do not be angry that I have written such a long request. Lessing already remarked that long letters are just easily written as short ones. More precisely, I am at school,

It would be nice because I prefer to cable from Hudson so as not to confuse Hochwald. He doesn’t know how close Hudson is to Minneapolis etc. and would think I left here.

I don’t have much time, and I am constantly disturbed.

Please share the latest developments with Dr. Bredig. Maybe all of you in New York know better and laugh at me... and “Philadelphia” means Philadelphia. I would be grateful for your advice and impressions.
Maybe everything will be clarified soon, but I think we should hurry. Hochwald received a Palestinian visa in November but only incidentally found out about it at the beginning of February, as he bitterly wrote in his letter from February 8th.

I hope you are doing well. Please thank Dr. Bredig for his last letter. I will write as soon as I know more. In the meantime, I hope to hear from you what you think about the case and whether the hotel exists.
